Forspoken is finally available on PS5 and it's time to show the world your strong, badass and magical fighting skills. Throughout Frey's journey you will learn different types of magic, but Violet Magic will be with you from the start and will remain a powerful tool throughout the game. To begin your journey, let's take a closer look at Frey's battle-focused purple magic and what it can do.
Frey starts with the following attack spells: Explosive Shot, Shield Shot, and Scatter Shot (each at level 1), as well as the support spell Bind. To learn more spells, you'll need to spend the mana points you collect as you level up and unlock mana pools scattered across Atea's vast landscape. The order in which you learn spells is up to you, but if you think you've made a mistake, don't worry: you can always remove a spell to recover mana to use elsewhere.
Let's take a look at some of the purple magic spells and detail how to best use them:
Magic attack
Continuous Smash: A powerful and reliable method of attacking, Continuous Smash creates an explosion of rocks after releasing its charge. The higher the rank of the spell and the longer the charge, the larger the ka tree that follows. If the enemy's defense is strong, try Charged Blast Shot - it can break the enemy's defense, throwing a shield at you with ease.
Shield Shot: Some enemies don't respect Frey's privacy. This is where shield fire comes into play. If you're charging Shield Bash and an enemy tries to attack you head-on, they'll be surprised when you respond with a shield bash to the face. The shield gets bigger at higher levels and can also act as a defense against some projectile attacks. Be careful that you are still vulnerable to side and rear attacks, as well as shield breaking attacks.
Scatter Shot: Love powerful attacks but hate "you can't attack while charging"? Then you'll appreciate the Scatter Shot mechanic. Holding the button fires quick bursts of small magical blasts as you charge to deliver a powerful finishing blow. The higher the level of the game, the stronger the explosion. Scatter Shot is great for ranged combat and is very effective against many flying enemies.
Support magic
Bind: Some enemies won't stick around while you try to target them, but Bind is always there to help. Snap temporarily stuns enemies in a large radius while firing freely, or if you don't feel like fighting, you can keep your distance while firing.
Tendril: If you're being attacked by angry mobs from all sides, Tendril is an excellent crowd control spell. It can be used on the ground or in the air and send large vines around Frey in a large circle. Not only can it destroy multiple enemies at once, but it can also heal based on the damage you've dealt.
Implant: The implant may seem small at first, but every time your attack hits a target, you'll also deal extra damage. This is a great play to use when facing an opponent with a large health bar.
Prime Minister: This spell is a bit complicated, but it's worth it. Use Prime to set traps on the ground and then try to lure your enemies using yourself as bait. Once the trap is stepped on, the explosion will knock nearby enemies to the ground. (Or, if you're feeling bad, your burst-charged rounds can also set off traps.) The knockback potential makes it a great setup for the kill.
Placement: This spell causes Frey to plant large flowers on the ground that quickly transform into beautiful towers to target enemies within range. Works well in conjunction with a scattershot when you want to keep your distance, and is also great for sending enemies flying.
Lich: Heals you if you get poisoned. Not much more to say here, but keep this in mind the next time you find yourself on the brink of death, slowly draining your health.
Shield: Want a shield hit defensive feature but it doesn't work well against enemies? Sails provide a similar protective wall against frontal impacts. But be careful: the cooldown takes a long time and can be interrupted by a devastating attack.
wave magic
Genesis: Genesis is a Surge Magic, a powerful attack that you can use by pressing L2 and R2, preferably in difficult situations because it has a long cooldown. The spell sent stone vines at a grounded target at close range in front of Frey. By increasing Surge and holding L2 and R2 longer, the area of effect increases for a few seconds, dealing more damage. As powerful as this spell is, it doesn't cover Frey from the back and sides and can leave Frey vulnerable to attack, especially when L2 and R2 are long pressed. Pay attention to your surroundings when you decide to unleash the power of Genesis.
That's a lot of spells and a lot to develop fun battle strategies. And if you think these spells are pretty, just wait until you see what red, blue and green magic has to offer. Don't forget to use the spellbooks to complete the combat and research tasks associated with each spell, as completing them will provide extremely useful rewards in battles.
