PS5 Creators: How Forspoken harnesses PS5’s power

Athia is a massive open world filled with places to explore, creatures to fight and puzzles to solve. Luminous Productions harnesses the power of the PlayStation to achieve this, magical flames erupting from Frey's hands in battle at the speed at which he zips across the vast world map.

Now that it's easier than ever for players to pick up a PS5 and dive into the world of Forspoken, Takeshi Aramaki, Head of Luminous Productions and Head of Forspoken, shares some thoughts on how the Luminous Productions team PS5- uses supported. . to bring this adventure to life:

PlayStation Blog: What were your first impressions when you discovered the power and capabilities of the PS5 from a developer's perspective?

Takeshi Aramaki: With the latest GPU capable of ray tracing and a high-speed SSD that reads data instantly, I felt that it would significantly change game development. Being able to display assets on screen without requiring load times will create new gaming experiences. When we started developing it, the biggest surprise was how easy it was to develop.

The DualSense wireless controller offers a unique level of immersion thanks to its adaptable and open actuators. When developing this PS5 game, how did your team approach the implementation of the DualSense controller?

DualSense is a unique controller, so we wanted to create a game that would allow players to fully feel and experience it. Since Forspoken is a game we made for PS5, we decided to assign L2 and R2 to cast spells so you can feel the return of customizable triggers. There are over 100 spells in Forspoken, and we've tweaked the power feedback for each so that each spell looks and feels unique. In addition, haptic feedback creates a realistic feeling of high-speed travel when using Magic Parkour.

Forspoken offers extremely fast travel in its fantastic open world. How did the development team use the power of the PS5 to achieve this?

The SSD makes the PS5 about 100 times faster than the PS4, which is enough in itself, but it also uses Oodle Kraken and Oodle Texture for data compression. Additionally, the PS5 also handles memory allocation and decompression on the hardware side. CPU processing of this data became the bottleneck, so we made over 100 tweaks to our Brilliant Engine to achieve those read speeds.

Forspoken features a variety of magical visual effects and character animations for Frey throughout the journey and journey. How did the team harness the power of the PS5 to deliver this stunning visual feat?

At Forspoken, we strive for unparalleled visual expression. The GPU handles the Magic Visual Effects shader and the CPU handles the many processing needs of Magic Parkour. The PS5's capabilities were more than adequate for what we wanted to do; In fact, it's so powerful that it encouraged us to add even more visual effects. Also, it usually requires a lot of memory to reach that level of expression, but the PS5 development tools are very easy to use and allow us to work faster than before. This gave us enough time to optimize the memory and processing load required for Forspoken's rich graphics.

Forspoken is now available on PlayStation 5.
