We at Obsidian are excited to announce the latest version of The Outer Worlds for PlayStation 5: The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition. Let's take a look at the exciting changes we've made to this board-approved RPG and how we did it.
Outer Worlds has been very well received by fans around the world and won many awards, so it's great to be able to improve on something that we know people love.
If you're not too familiar with the game, here's a quick overview:
When a colony ship bound for the far reaches of the galaxy disappears en route, you wake up decades later and find yourself at the center of a deep conspiracy that threatens to destroy the colony. Explore the various planets and locations of Halcyon, including the mysterious asteroid Gorgon and the magnificent Eridanos Distillery. The decisions you make while fighting the various factions vying for power determine how the story unfolds.
The last generation of consoles came out exactly one year after the initial release of the game. So it made sense for us to take advantage of the latest PlayStation 5 hardware features and feedback-enabled DualSense controllers to update the core game, lock in existing content, and ensure it stays relevant and relevant for years to come. So Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition.
Here's how the team does it.
Go beyond visual enhancements
Of course, graphical upgrades are part of the deal. We were able to go to 4K, 60 FPS graphics, fine-tune 3D lighting, fine-tune particle systems, and fine-tune environments with higher resource density. We've raised the bar in many other ways: we've made combat and AI support smarter, improved the open-world feel with greater depth of field and accessible landscapes, updated variable weather, and redesigned player models and animations. Personality doesn't matter, we dare not touch the essence of what makes The Outer Worlds great. There's no point in reinventing the wheel, but new tires are always a plus.
However, an entirely new and interesting set of features are the adaptive triggers and tactile features of the DualSense wireless controller. When using different types of weapons, players will enjoy different trigger effects depending on their type. For weapons like flamethrowers, players will experience linear stress. When firing an automatic weapon, the trigger's recoil will create a pulse effect with each shot. And for single-shot weapons like snipers or shotguns, the effect of pulling the trigger will mimic the feel of the trigger until the firing pin and drag are reduced. Pretty neat, right? Games will not only look better, but also sharper.
Valuation of heritage
If the improvements we've described above weren't enough to justify this new version, we think it would make more sense if this Choice Edition pad included the base game's DLC: Danger in the Gorgon and Assassination in Eridanos. Here's what we did. Now the experience is richer! Side note: We know many places appreciate that this is an accessible experience, not too short, not too long. Rest assured, none of these DLCs expand the main story. They exist side by side and offer new storylines that you can enjoy whenever you want after reaching the appropriate level. Oh, and we've raised the level cap to 99, giving players more ways to build their character from the seven branches of the skill tree.
If you already own The Outer Worlds base game on PlayStation 4 and the associated DLC, Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos, you can upgrade to The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition on PlayStation 5 at a discounted price.*
