Unearthing Below: Striking Distance Studios detail The Callisto Protocol’s new area

Welcome to Black Metal Prison, a high-security prison on a remote location on Jupiter's moon Callisto. Let's dive into how Protocol Callisto's atmospheric setting, charming characters, and terrifying creatures make the fight to survive the horrors of Jupiter's dying moon an immersive experience.

A familiar-looking futurist.

One of the most important elements of any survival horror game is the setting: the place or places where the player must survive or die. The Callisto Protocols are filled with intriguing locations like Down, a series of tunnels left over from the "down" prison once used by the Arkas, Callisto's first human colony. For Asim Zubair, environmental art director, the original concept begins with a simple design philosophy: "Make it dark, wet and menacing."

Below is an example of our great light and they gave our local team the exciting challenge of designing a unique space similar to the dungeon above and providing local insight into its creation and the first Callisto colony.

And of course. However, the setting below stands out among sci-fi survival horror games due to its realistic inspiration.

"[Tach is unique] because it draws heavily on real-world materials and shapes," Zubair says. "Instead of the strong sci-fi design cues that dominate many of the game's environments, the underlying allows players to feel something familiar and relatable that allows them to see beyond humanity's first attempt to colonize a dead moon."

Apart from placing the player in a familiar setting, Zubair's favorite part of composition is atmosphere and storytelling. "It then provides opportunities to use space to tell good exploration, hidden locations, horror situations and interesting local stories," he says.

If you dare to explore the dark corners of the nether, there are many secrets to discover and perhaps a glimpse into the dark past of the former colony.

The story of a pioneering human being in the future

As in the Ambient Narrative, Chief Secretary R. Eric Lieb has crafted a compelling story and complex characters to heighten the player's fear and dread of the Callisto Protocols. "Complex characters are important because their actions and decisions drive the plot," says Lib. "However, the horror genre serves as a special box for characters whose actions and choices are often matters of life and death."

The bond between the game's protagonist, Jacob Lee, and his bodyguard, Captain Leon Ferris, creates an interesting narrative hook. "When we were developing Leon, we described him as Jacob's 'dark mirror,'" says Lieb. "Thematically, both begin at the same point, unaware (or willfully blind) of the consequences of their actions."

"Their meeting destroyed their comfortable world together," Lieb said. "How everyone reacts to what's happening in Black Metal and who's really responsible for it, will shape their relationships [as well as] the perception of the world that players are presented with when they play."

Sam Wittwer's voice and performance bring the charming character of Captain Farris to life. One of the things that made him stand out during the audition was his approach to the character. From the beginning, he gives Leon a subtle threat that keeps him on his toes, like a coiled snake, whether he attacks or not. Sam is an actor who wants to understand everything about his characters and their role in the story, so once we cast him as Leon, it was a great collaboration as we continued to develop the character.

For example, during readings, Wittwer always asks probing questions or makes comments that fit the logical or emotional motivations of the painting. And it always depends. No spoilers, but there's one scene in particular that hints that Striking Distance Studios will be leaning towards the original when filming Sam. Sam Wittwer has great instincts and a good understanding of how to make a story.

Biophages and descend into monsters

Character director Glauco Longhi and the creature creators at Amata Distance Studios realized the importance of building fear by creating creatures that are up close and grounded.

"We started with the idea that people are being infected, so part of the fear is that what happens to them can happen to you," Longhi said. But biophages are not only humanoid forms, they also have perceptions based on human emotions such as pain, fear and anger.

Protocol Callisto contains plenty of enemies to shock and intimidate players, but the Grunts are a very human sight. "[Grunt] bridges the gap between humans and larger creatures, whose figure, size, and anatomy are somewhat human-like," Longhi said.

Rushers are another enemy that runs on walls, dashes and jumps on players. "[Rushers] had such a convoluted movement, with convoluted joints and legs," Longhi says.

Discover even more fearsome monsters, interesting characters, compelling stories, and terrifying environments when Callisto Protocol launches on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on December 2, 2022.
