11 things you must know about Star Ocean The Divine Force

Star Ocean The Divine Force is coming to PS5 and PS4 soon! This action-packed sci-fi RPG takes on the popular RPG series with a strong story, innovative game mechanics, and combat system... *Kiss the Chef.

However, we bet some of you are wondering what this game is all about. Read on and we'll tell you everything you need to know:

Star Ocean is the sixth main entry in the series…

You've probably played Star Ocean, or at least heard of it. The series has been around since 1996 and has gained a lot of attention for its unique sci-fi imagery. While many RPGs lean towards fantasy tropes, the Star Ocean series is all about space opera: think spaceships, interplanetary travel, advanced technology, and more. Even now it seems very unique to the genre.

Star Ocean is the sixth major game in the Divine Power series and brings new ideas including unparalleled freedom of movement and a fast-paced combat system.

But it is completely neutral.

Like other RPG series like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, each entry in the Star Ocean series is an adventure in itself. You don't have to play the previous game to know what's going on - the entire narrative is in the game from start to finish. Of course, if you're a fan of past games, you might find some references…

It is a fantastic adventure that combines science fiction and fantasy.

The adventure begins when starship captain Raymond Lawrence lands on the planet Aster IV. This dangerous world is like a step into a long-forgotten past for a young space traveler: people still live in castles, wear shields, and governments fight each other. Teamed up with a warrior girl named Letizia, he sets out to find the rest of the group and leave the planet...not knowing that he will soon be drawn into a conflict that will threaten the entire universe.

The dual character system returns from the previous game.

At the beginning of the adventure you can choose between two main characters: Raymond or Leticia. This is not just a cosmetic decision; it depends on the events that happen and the allies you can recruit and who you play with.

You can play as Raymond…

Raymond Idas is the captain of his family's freighter, Lawrence Logistics. He is a kind boy with big hair and a big heart. He can be bold and reckless, which often gets him into trouble, but he throws himself into the heart of danger to protect his friends. He is a main character who is easy to like.

Or Leticia

Letitia is the princess of the Kingdom of Aucerium, a vast empire located on the retrograde planet Aster IV. He was a knight and very skilled with two swords, which made people admire him. Leticia is passionate, and meeting Raymond opens her eyes to a world bigger than she's ever known...but more than anything, she loves her kingdom and will do anything to protect it.

You have a lot of freedom of movement

At the beginning of the story, Raymond and Leticia meet a mysterious creature called DUMA. This gives our heroes access to magical powers, including the ability to go anywhere. With the push of a button, characters can fly into the sky to quickly climb rocks or fly over buildings; now you can explore the vast expanse of Star Ocean's divine power from all directions!

The fight is incredibly fast…

The Star Ocean series is known for its action-packed combat, but Divine Power takes things to a whole new level! You'll have access to a party of up to four characters at a time, each with an ever-growing set of skills and abilities. You can assign different commands to the buttons on the front of the controller, giving you direct access to commands, combos, items, and more.

... and effective ...

DUMA transforms combat by giving you the ability to not only move with style, but circle around your opponents. Your Vanguard Attack ability allows you to attack your enemies with lightning speed. Change direction at the last moment to launch a blind attack: you will overtake your confused enemy and leave him completely defenseless. Yes, this is as fun as it sounds!

But if you want, you can slow down the process.

All of the above makes for a tense combat system, but if you like RPGs and want to think about your moves, you can use idle mode to pause and redirect the action. Take a breath when planning your goals or strategy.

You can recruit and meet some partners.

When you play Star Ocean The Divine Force, you will encounter a variety of allies, each with their own personality and fighting style. Everything is playable and you can easily switch between them in and out of battle. Personal activities allow you to spend time with these monsters, get unique character stories and unique endings, so it's good to get to know your team!

This is just an overview of Star Ocean Divine Power - there's a lot to discover in this game, but honestly, we don't want to spoil any surprises (and god, if there are surprises).

The game will be released on October 27th on PS5 and PS4. However, if you want to try it out for yourself now, there's also a free demo available for download (note that progress doesn't carry over to the full game).

We hope you enjoy the game. See you in the sea of stars!
